South Shore Shark Sightings Cause Curran To Enhance Police Patrol

Sharks were spotted this week at Jones Beach and Nickerson Beach.

LIDO BEACH, NY — A pair of shark sightings has put Nassau County on the offensive.

Nassau County police are stepping up patrols via water and air, using boats and helicopters to check for sharks "to keep an eye out for anything dangerous potentially lurking under the water," County Executive Laura Curran announced.

On Wednesday, a shark of an undetermined species got within 25 yards of the shore at Nickerson Beach, causing a brief delay for swimmers. The next day, two sand sharks 4-5 feet in length, were near Jones Beach Field 6. Swimming was prohibited for several hours until the sharks left the area, Curran said.
