Town Honors Bay Constables that Saved Two in Sinking Boat
They rescued the two boaters and towed them back to shore.

Town of Hempstead Bay Constables did not hesitate to respond to a distress call from a sinking vessel with two passengers one mile south of the Sands catering hall in Atlantic Beach on Oct. 30. With the boat taking on water, two brave constables – Brendon Moran and Joseph Ciccimarro – saved the passengers onboard and had the sinking craft towed to a port in Atlantic Beach.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony Santino and the Town Board presented Moran and Ciccimarro with the Distinguished Service Award during Tuesday’s town board meeting. The Bay Constables of the town’s Department of Conservation and Waterways have made more than a dozen rescues this year.
“The need for assistance at sea can happen in an instant and thankfully we have dedicated Bay Constables who respond immediately when the call comes in,” Santino said. “Whether it is the peak of the summer or a weekend in late October, we are proud to say that our Bay Constables are patrolling the seas and saving lives.”

Moran and Cicciamarro responded to a distress call at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30. When they arrived, the distressed vessel was taking on water in the engine room, which rendered the boat powerless. The two passengers onboard the boat were advised to wear lifejackets, and the Bay Constables proceeded to tow the vessel to its home port of Atlantic Beach. Later, the vessel’s owner was able to pull it out of the water via a boat lift to prevent further damage.
“The quick actions of Brendon Moran and Joseph Ciccimarro prevented a tragedy which could have cost lives,” Santino added. “We are thankful for their service and their heroics.”
