In Wake Of LB Synagogue Burglary, Rabbi Creates GoFundMe Page

The Chabad of the Beaches, which had Torahs stolen, seeks donations to upgrade the temple's security.

LONG BEACH, NY — The community is coming to the aid of the Chabad of the Beaches, a Long Beach synagogue that was burglarized Saturday with Torahs stolen, police said.

Rabbi Eli Goodman launched a GoFundMe to help with funding a new security system.

The synagogue was broken into after the first Shabbat following a refurbishing of the sanctuary, the rabbi posted on GoFundMe.

The page has received more than $14,000 donations in two days.

He said they seek money now instead of waiting for funds from Homeland Security to become available.

Police charged Hunter McLerath, 23, on counts of burglary, criminal mischief and grand larceny.
