Reworld™, a leader in sustainable waste solutions, recently partnered with the Town of Hempstead to recognize students from schools across the Town for their creativity and commitment to environmental awareness during their annual Earth Day Poster Contest. The longstanding initiative has been running for over 30 years and invites students in grades 1 through 8 to explore themes of sustainability through art, encouraging young people to think critically about recycling, energy conservation, and protecting natural resources in their communities.
“This contest is a powerful reminder that even the youngest members of our community have a voice in shaping a more sustainable future,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor John R. Ferretti. “Their ideas, expressed through art, highlight the importance of protecting our environment and serve as an inspiration to us all.”
The contest continues to be a cornerstone Earth Day tradition in the Town, showcasing how environmental education can take shape beyond the classroom. Students submitted original artwork that captured a wide range of ideas, from reducing waste to protecting wildlife, demonstrating how these messages are resonating with today’s youth in meaningful and personal ways.
Entries were judged in two categories: grades 1-4 and grades 5-8. In the grades 1-4 category, Alice Rogulski of James A. Dever School was awarded first place. Jasleen Kaur of Polk Street School earned second place, and Findlay O’Bryon, also of Polk Street School, placed third. In the grades 5-8 category, Ashley Lopez Chavez of Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School earned first place, followed by Arlyn Euceda of Polk Street School in second place, and Andy Tined of James A. Dever School in third. Honorable mentions were awarded to Sehajpreet Kaur of Howell Road School and Aidan Rizzotti of Oceanside School #5.
“It’s incredibly meaningful to see how thoughtfully these students are engaging with environmental issues at such a young age,” said Maureen Early, Lead Community Relations Specialist at Reworld™. “Each year, their artwork reflects their creativity and a genuine understanding of why sustainability matters. Top winners received Barnes & Noble Nooks and gift cards, and the schools of first-place recipients were awarded gift cards to support continued learning and creativity in the classroom. The recognition serves as a shared commitment by the Town of Hempstead and Reworld™ to invest in educational opportunities that encourage environmental responsibility at an early age.
