2 Planes Narrowly Avoid Colliding Above JFK Airport On Monday: FAA

QUEENS, NY — JFK Airport was the site of another near miss Monday, as a Delta Air Lines plane was crossed over by a small plane that was making its way in to land, federal officials said.

On May 4, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Endeavor Air Flight 5289 was on final approach to Runway 22L at JFK when a Cirrus SR22 crossed over to land on Runway 22R, FAA officials said.

“Air traffic control provided traffic advisories to both pilots, and each reported the other in sight,” FAA officials said. “The required separation was maintained.”

Endeavor was operating the flight on behalf of Delta Air Lines, who reiterated the FAA’s statement regarding the mandatory separation.

“Safety is always the top priority at Endeavor Air and Delta. As noted by the FAA, the required separation was maintained by Endeavor Air flight 5289 on May 4 in accordance with the traffic advisory issued,” a Delta spokesperson said. “Endeavor Air flight crews are well-trained to manage through these situations and we appreciate their professionalism."

This week’s near-miss comes just weeks after a Republic Airways Flight and Jazz Aviation Flight nearly collided on April 20 at the same Queens airport.
