Suffolk Police Entrance Exam To Be Offered Every 2 Years: Officials

The new testing schedule begins in spring 2027 and is meant to give applicants more chances to join SCPD, officials say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — The Suffolk County Police entrance exam will be offered every two years beginning in spring 2027, ending the previous four-year wait between tests, county officials said.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina revealed the new schedule after approval from Suffolk County Civil Service.

Officials said the change is designed to strengthen police recruitment by creating a more consistent flow of candidates, reducing attrition and shortening the time between the exam and hiring.

The new schedule will double the number of opportunities for applicants to enter the hiring pool, officials said.

“Suffolk County is one of the safest places in the country as we are committed to providing our law enforcement with the best resources available,” Romaine said. “By making the police test more accessible and providing applicants additional opportunities, we are casting a wider net to recruit the best and brightest to protect our communities.”

Catalina said the change will help the department recruit and retain qualified candidates.

“This change provides more opportunities for qualified candidates to pursue a job in law enforcement while strengthening our ability to recruit and retain the best talent,” Catalina said. “This change will help reduce delays in the recruitment process and ensure we remain prepared to meet the public safety needs of our residents.”

Information on the recruitment process is available at JoinSCPD.com, officials said.
