LONG ISLAND, NY — Westbury native Matt Seelinger made his first Major League appearance just minutes from home at Citi Field on Tuesday night, but the 31-year-old right-handed pitcher was designated for assignment by the New York Mets the following day.
According to MLB, the Mets acquired Seelinger from the Detroit Tigers on Monday in a trade for cash considerations. The Mets selected his contract from the Triple-A Syracuse Mets on Tuesday, giving him his first MLB call-up.
Seelinger entered the game in the seventh inning against the Kansas City Royals and pitched two innings. He allowed seven runs in the seventh inning before returning for a scoreless eighth inning. The Mets ultimately fell to the Royals, 16-12.
Before his call-up, Seelinger posted a 3.89 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 19 walks over 39 1/3 innings in 27 appearances for Triple-A Toledo this season, according to Minor League Baseball statistics.
The Farmingdale State College alum and former Long Island Ducks pitcher reached the majors after years in the minor leagues.
Seelinger is now in the DFA process, meaning the Mets have seven days to trade him or place him on waivers.
