LONG ISLAND, NY — Three dog names have been crowned the most popular in New York, according to a U.S. News & World Report analysis of popular dog names released earlier this month.
The top three in the Empire State are Luna, Bella, and Max, U.S. News reported.

The name Bella appeared as the number one name in 28 states, and as a top name in general in 47 states. The second most popular name in the U.S., Luna, appeared in the top 36 states and at the number one spot in 13 states.
According to the news outlet, the chance of meeting a Luna is more likely than meeting a Bailey or Louie in New York, but not in states like South Dakota where those names are more popular. Some names were unique to the state, such as Koa being a top name in only Hawaii and Barron in Montana.
Food names, such as Pepper and Oreo, are still standing their ground, as well as movie names like Nala from The Lion King.
U.S. News said the analysis was based on half a million data points from a third-party pet insurance industry partner in June 2026, which contained dog names registered from January 2022 to June 2026.
