LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island middle and high school students can compete for $3,000 scholarships through Optimum's annual Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest.
The contest, now in its 19th year, is open to students in grades 6 through 12 who attend schools within Optimum's service area. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Oct. 15.
Held in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the contest asks students to reflect on the people, traditions and contributions that have shaped Hispanic culture.
This year's prompt asks students, in 500 words or fewer, to identify a Hispanic individual, work of art, historical contribution, community organization or cultural value that has inspired them or changed the way they think about Hispanic culture.
Students should describe what they learned from that influence and explain how it has shaped their perspective, goals or connection to their community.
Four grand prize scholarships of $3,000 will be awarded across Optimum's service area, along with honorable mention prizes, according to the company.
Students from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are eligible to participate, but essays must be written in English.
"For nearly two decades, Optimum's Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest has given students a platform to reflect on the people, traditions, and experiences that connect them to Hispanic culture," Sean O'Connell, senior vice president and general manager at Optimum, said. "As the program enters its 19th year, we're proud to continue celebrating student voices while recognizing the rich histories, cultures, and contributions that make Hispanic heritage so meaningful in the communities we serve."
Optimum will also recognize educators who encourage students to enter the contest. Special gifts will be given to educators who sponsor the highest number of student submissions.
