LONG ISLAND, NY — New York State Police issued more than 400 tickets during work zone enforcement details conducted across Long Island this year, authorities said.
Since April, State Police Troop have partnered with the New York State Department of Transportation on Operation Hard Hat details in active work zones, according to police.
The initiative is aimed at improving work zone safety and cracking down on driving behaviors that could endanger highway workers, motorists and law enforcement officers.
Troopers issued 404 tickets in and around NYSDOT work zones during 2026, including 181 for speeding, police said.
Other violations included 24 for cell phone or texting use, 23 for failing to obey traffic control devices, 19 Move Over Law violations, 12 seat belt violations, five unsafe lane change or lane usage violations and four other moving violations. Troopers also issued 136 tickets for other non-moving violations.
State Police reminded motorists to slow down in work zones, remain alert, obey signs and traffic control personnel, avoid distractions and move over when required by law.
"Roadside workers deserve to return home safely at the end of every shift," police said. "Motorists can help make that happen by driving responsibly."
