Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines fighting techniques with fluid movement, acrobatics and music. Join us for a safe and beginner-friendly full body workout focused on improving coordination, stamina and mobility. All fitness levels are welcome.

Background: Capoeira originated in Brazil during the 16th century as a form of resistance and cultural expression for enslaved Africans. Today it is practiced all over the world.
Instructors: Classes will be led by Instrutor Salseiro and Instrutora Esquila of Capoeira Guatambu Lower East Side. With over 20 years of experience in capoeira each, they teach classes for adults and children at Abrons Arts Center. Mark DeGarmo Dance’s Dance for Dance for Social Change 2026 celebrates MDD’s 39th and 44th anniversaries as a leading NYC not-for-profit dance organization dedicated to education, performance, and intercultural community-building. The community event celebrates our 39- and 44-year commitment to provide our evidence-based dance program to the least-resourced public elementary students, schools, families, and communities across NYC. Without our support, funding and dedication our school partners rarely provide evidence-based dance education programs. The celebration includes a presentation with refreshments, a silent auction, a dance lesson, dancing, and students performing. &nbsp;We honor internationally recognized performer, teacher, choreographer, and author, Dr. Daniel Lewis, with our “Educational Visionary” Lifetime Achievement Award 2026 presented by Dante Puleio, Artistic Director of the José Limón Dance Company.
Dance for Dance is MDD’s annual Lower East Side community celebration that raises awareness and funds to support our vision, mission, and programs. That mission integrates education, performance, and intercultural community through dance. We use dance to engage and empower students. Our program, Partnerships in Literacy through Dance and Creativity, was cited as “a national model” by the National Endowment for the Arts. President Obama commended Dr. DeGarmo and Mark DeGarmo Dance for “your service to your communities and the nation.” Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer designated Nov. 17, 2017 as “Mark DeGarmo Dance Day in Manhattan.” Miss America 2019 Nia Imani Franklin accepted MDD’s Arts Education Advocacy Award 2019.

Come and learn some practical tools for taking care of yourself, through the practice of T’ai Chi Chuan. Principles, postures and movements from the T’ai Chi form will be introduced, to help you notice were you tend to hold tension in your body, release that tension, and develop a more relaxed, balanced state. Benefits are physical and psychological, enabling us to stay grounded and balanced, despite what life throws at us.

Presented by the <a href="https://www.taichichuan.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">New York School of T’ai Chi Chuan</a>, Tai Chi is suitable for people of all ages, and no special clothing or equipment is required. Classes will be held on the center lawn and are weather permitting (follow us on social media for class cancellations). 
For thousands of years, the principles and practice of T’ai Chi Chuan have been helping people to release tension, regain their health, and experience more of their full potential. Literally translated as “Supreme Ultimate Fist,” T’ai Chi Chuan has been called the queen of martial arts. It’s basic tenet is simple and evident in Nature— “In Softness there is Strength.”

Join Nicole for an open level Pilates mat class!
Pilates is a full body workout that focuses on core strength, mind-body connection and mobility.&nbsp; In this class you can expect breathwork, stretching and a good amount of abs, back, and hip (butt y'all!) exercises. Modifications to simplify or challenge the workout will be offered throughout.&nbsp;
Nicole has been teaching Pilates in studios and gyms around NYC since 2012. Having grown up in the LES she is excited to be back in Corlears sharing her love of movement and our special corner of the city.&nbsp;
Mats are provided but it is recommended to bring a towel for extra padding and support for when you're laying on your back.&nbsp;

Come and learn some practical tools for taking care of yourself, through the practice of T’ai Chi Chuan. Principles, postures and movements from the T’ai Chi form will be introduced, to help you notice were you tend to hold tension in your body, release that tension, and develop a more relaxed, balanced state. Benefits are physical and psychological, enabling us to stay grounded and balanced, despite what life throws at us.

For thousands of years, the principles and practice of T’ai Chi Chuan have been helping people to release tension, regain their health, and experience more of their full potential. Literally translated as “Supreme Ultimate Fist,” T’ai Chi Chuan has been called the queen of martial arts. It’s basic tenet is simple and evident in Nature— “In Softness there is Strength.”
