Driver Charged In Crash That Killed 90-Year-Old Woman, Police Say

The driver was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care, police said.

CHINATOWN, NY — A driver was arrested and charged in the fatal crash that killed a 90-year-old woman last November, police said.

Police said Benny Louie, 67, was arrested for failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care.

On November 15, 2018 about 1 p.m., police responded to a car crash at Bayard St. and Bowery in the Fifth Precinct, according to police. Louie was driving a 2015 Toyota Sienna eastbound on Bayard and attempted to make a left turn on Bowery, where he hit a woman in the crosswalk.

Officers found Ngan Leung, 90, conscious and alert, but in pain at the intersection, police said.

Emergency medical services took her to Bellevue Hospital, where she died six days later on Nov. 21.

Louie remained on the scene. At the time, police issued a summons to him, Gothamist reported.

Police said Tuesday further investigation with the Manhattan District Attorney's office led to the charges made Tuesday.

Just days after Lueng died, another fatal Chinatown car crash left one dead and six injured back in November.

At the intersection where Leung died at Bayard St. and Bowery, 29 people have been injured between 2009 to Jan. 31, 2019, according to Vision Zero city data.
