'Who Killed Vincent Chin?' Screening, Q&A With Associate Producer on Lower East Side

Come see the Academy Award nominated documentary and talk with Nancy Tong at the Chatham Square Library 2 p.m. Saturday.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — Looking for something to do this weekend on the Lower East Side? The Chatham Square Library is holding a screening of the film Who Killed Vincent Chin? and a Q&A with the documentary's associate producer Nancy Tong 2 p.m. Saturday. This screening is part of the library's Chinese in America film series.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1989. It tells the story of Vincent Chin, a successful Chinese engineer in Detroit in 1982.

Chin was violently killed in the summer of 1982. Despite the bloody crime, the assailants initially receive lenient sentences because of a plea bargain. This outraged civil rights advocates at the time, who then fought for justice to prove that Chin's attackers had racist motivations.

"This documentary is just as important in 2016 as it was when it was released. The themes of economic strife, crumbling blue collar industries, and the racial tensions that result from these struggles are all issues America is still dealing with to this day," according to the library's website.
