Accidental West Hempstead Fire Leaves 10 Without Home: FD

Fire marshals say 6 adults and 4 children have been displaced.

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — Ten people have been displaced after a house fire in West Hempstead on Wednesday evening, fire marshals said.

The West Hempstead Fire Department responded to a two-story, two-family home on Willets Ave. at 6:31 p.m. and found a fire in the basement, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said.

Approximately 50 firefighters brought the fire under control within 30 minutes, fire marshals said.

According to fire marshals, the fire department determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.

Six adults and four children are being assisted by the Red Cross after their home was deemed uninhabitable, fire marshals said.

Fire officials said the local building department was notified.

Mutual aid was provided by Elmont, Franklin Square & Munson, Hempstead, Roosevelt, and South Hempstead fire departments, all under the command of Chief Brohm, fire officials said.
