Brooklyn Avenue School Showcases Engaging and Interactive Black History Month Wax Museum

Students Celebrate the Black Historical Figures and Cultural Icons Through Community Exhibit

In celebration of Black History Month, sixth-grade students at Brooklyn Avenue School transformed the school library into an engaging and interactive wax museum, showcasing influential Black historical figures and cultural icons. Through the immersive exhibit, students highlighted the lives and legacies of individuals who have made lasting contributions to history, science, mathematics, the arts and sports.

As part of the project, students in Ms. Calamiong’s class conducted in-depth research on a figure of their choice, examining primary and secondary sources to better understand their impact and achievements. The experience went beyond a traditional history lesson, providing a hands-on opportunity for students to strengthen their research, writing, and presentation skills.

After completing their research, students wrote and memorized speeches about their chosen figure. During the Wax Museum event, students stood in character as living exhibits, ready to share their knowledge with visitors and answer questions, creating an engaging and educational experience for all who attended.

The wax museum quickly became a dynamic space for learning as students presented their work to classmates, teachers, and visiting families. Parents and guardians walked through the exhibits, engaging in thoughtful conversations with the young historians about the achievements and lasting influence of the individuals they portrayed.

Younger students from throughout the building were also invited to attend the showcase, offering them an exciting preview of what awaits them in sixth grade. The experience introduced them to the research and creative process they will undertake in the coming years, while inspiring curiosity and appreciation for history.

“This project is a wonderful example of how our students engage deeply with history while developing important academic and presentation skills,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas. “By researching and embodying these influential figures, our students not only learn about their achievements, but also gain a deeper appreciation for the perseverance, innovation, and leadership that helped shape our world.”

The Black History Month wax museum highlights Brooklyn Avenue School’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of history and culture.
