Statement from Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st AD)
“As parents, we have a right to do what is best for our children, especially when it has to do with their education. With opt-outs in my district ranging – in Baldwin at 37 percent and Rockville Centre at 60 percent – it is clear that, now more than ever, parents are standing up to do what they feel is right for their kids. Two weeks ago, as we passed a final state budget, I did the same thing and stood with our children, teachers and schools by voting against the governor’s so-called “reforms” to education. After Common Core’s botched roll-out, we are left with a mess that negatively impacts our children and teachers. What the governor and the state Education Department now must do is listen to parents, have a transparent process moving forward and replace Common Core with a curriculum developed at the local level that doesn’t follow a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach, but instead, truly evaluates the success of our children and teachers.”
