CURRAN PRESENTS AWARDS TO LYNBROOK, EAST ROCKAWAY STUDENTS IN THE 2015 FLAG DAY ART/ESSAY CONTEST

The Lynbrook 2015 Flag Day Contest winners and honorable mentions at Greis Park with Assemblyman Brian Curran, Lynbrook Village Trustee Ann Marie Reardon, Island Park Fire Dept. Chief Anthony D’Esposito, and former Lynbrook Village Justice William Gaylor.
Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st AD) recently honored the winners of his annual Flag Day Art and Essay contest held at Greis Park in Lynbrook.
“It is great to see so many children wanting to participate in this year’s contest. They showed the community what the American Flag means to them,” said Curran. “We had roughly 400 students participate in this year’s contest! I want to especially thank our veterans who willingly gave up their morning to judge this year’s contest. The patriotism and care these students exhibit are a testament to the dedication and involvement their parents, this community and our educators have in raising civically-engaged children. We all should be very proud of them.”
Schools entered in the contest included: Robert W. Carbornaro School, Brooklyn Avenue School, and William L. Buck School in Valley Stream; St. Christopher’s School in Baldwin; Centre Avenue Elementary School and St. Raymond’s School in East Rockaway; Waverly Park Elementary School, the Kindergarten Center, Marion Street Elementary School, Our Lady of Peace School, and West End Elementary School in Lynbrook; Davison Avenue Intermediate School and Our Lady of Lourdes School in Malverne; St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead; and William S. Covert Elementary School in Rockville Centre.

Students from kindergarten to sixth grade were eligible to enter the contest. This year’s winners from Lynbrook included: Kindergarten Winner Iman Aboud from the Kindergarten Center; First Grade Winner Leia Cohen from Waverly Park Elementary School and First Grade Honorable Mention Asian Islam from West End Elementary School; Third Grade Winners Alexis Raynor from Marion Street Elementary School and Nawar Aboud from West End Elementary School; Fourth Grade Winners Kate Chiculli from Marion Street Elementary School and Tucker Pronko from West End Elementary School, and Fourth Grade Honorable Mention Bridget Maloney from West End Elementary School; Fifth Grade Winners Elaine Kelly and Kathrine Hansen from Our Lady of Peace, and Fifth Grade Honorable Mentions Mia Habert, Enda Hughes, and Sean Walsh from Our Lady of Peace, as well as Natalie Palomino and Dimitri Marinos from Waverly Park Elementary School.
This year’s winners from East Rockaway included: First Grade Winners Julia Sidelman from Centre Avenue School and Elizabeth Canty from St. Raymond’s School, and First Grade Honorable Mentions Kevin Hopper from Centre Avenue School and Anna Kuhner from St. Raymond’s School; Second Grades Winner Grace Profitlich and Second Grade Honorable Mention Cassidy Conklin, from Centre Avenue School; Third Grade Winner Nicholas Blette and Third Grade Honorable Mention Emma VanWickler, from Centre Avenue School; Fourth Grade Winner Anthony Sanzo and Fourth Grade Honorable Mention Emma Araoz, from Centre Avenue School; Fifth Grade Winner Maddy Prucha and Fifth Grade Honorable Mention Felicia Oosterwijk, from Centre Avenue School; and Sixth Grade Winner Allyson Lovera and Sixth Grade Honorable Mention Isabella Abrusso, from Centre Avenue School.
All winners received a New York State Assembly Certificate of Merit, an American Flag and a Carvel ice cream gift certificate. Assemblyman Curran has held this event every year he has been in office in the New York State Assembly.
With over 350 people in attendance, family and friends from the community attended the event to commemorate the American Flag. The ceremony featured the color guard unit from the Lynbrook VFW Post, and members of the Lynbrook American Legion, who performed the Pledge of Allegiance.
