Dwight Gooden Visits Fans at Lynbrook Card Shack
Over 500 turn out to see former New York Mets, Yankees pitcher.
The Subway Series rivalry was put to rest, if only for a few hours, as over 500 fans visited Card Shack on Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook to meet former New York Mets and Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden.
"It was a phenomenal experience," said Steve Cardi, owner of the Card Shack.
A lifelong Mets fan himself, Cardi recalled Gooden's 1985 season, the year he won the Cy Young Award, as his favorite "Doc" memory. "He was a gentleman. He was great with the fans and very sociable."
Alexander Berry, a 9-year-old Lynbrook resident, got a baseball signed by Gooden.
"It was exciting," said Berry, a Yankees fan. "It was good because I never got an autograph from an old player."
In 10 seasons with the Mets, Gooden won the Triple Crown (leading the National League in wins, strikeouts and ERA) in 1985, and a World Series championship in 1986. As a Yankee, Gooden pitched a no-hitter in 1996. He retired in 2001.
