Elderly Nassau Woman Hit By Car And Killed

Policed say she was crossing the street when she was hit by a car. She died a few hours later.

An elderly Nassau woman was killed Tuesday night when she was hit by a car while walking in West Hempstead.

According to police, Irene Zambardino, 85, of Westbury, was crossing Hempstead Avenue in front of Venus Restaurant, located at 546 Hempstead Ave., at 8:30 p.m. when she was hit by a 2012 Toyota Yaris.

The driver, a 56-year-old woman, immediately stopped and called 911. Zambardino was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she was died at 11:10 p.m.

A brake and safety inspection was conducted on the car, and it was released to the driver. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
