Feb. 14: Hearts, Flushing, Feuding Soccer Clubs, and More Things to Know TODAY

Hearts, clubs and a royal flush. It sounds like a card game, but it's actually just a Monday and ofcourse, Valentine's Day, in Malverne and West Hempstead.

Here's your guide to the top local stories and events happening this Feb. 14:

  1. West Hempstead Field Feud: Love isn't the only battlefield. Tension over use of the fields and other sports facilities continues in West Hempstead with coaches, parents, soccer clubs and school board members divided over who has a right to the playing space. The dispute was in the spotlight Tuesday night at an open policy work session held by the board, at which many of the parents were given the opportunity to argue their points on the issue to those who will have the final say on the policy.   2. Cupid's Corner: Still, need to pick up flowers or chocolate for your Valentine? Check back at noon for a guide to local places that will have the cards, gifts and red roses your special person will be expecting today. Forget to make dinner reservations? You may still be in luck.   3. Lakeview Fire: A blaze ripped through a home in Lakeview Sunday morning, sending one person to the hospital. Patch will have the full story later today.
  4. Flushing Begins: At with Long Island American Water President Bill Varley, an announcement was made that the company would flush out the entire system this week to remove some of the sediment that is contributing to the brown tap water problem in the area. Many residents received phone calls over the weekend and Varley has contacted local groups to get out the word that he is keeping his. The company said they will be conducting hydrant flushing starting today for Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview. Flushing will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m, and will continue through Friday, Feb. 18. (They are going to start in the vicinity of Cornwell Avenue and move out to surrounding streets.) Residents are instructed not to wash laundry during this time. If you notice that your cold water becomes discolored during the flushing, let the water run at a slow rate until it clears. A more detailed schedule of the flushing will be available soon.
