I am going to be completely honest with you right now, and I hope you will continue coming back after you have heard my secret (well at this point it may not be a secret since I did this post about wanting my son to be a dork)......I am a BIG Sci-Fi comic book geek, and so is my husband. Not only that, but we plan to raise our son the same way, and hopefully the geek will be strong in that one to! So when I found out about the free comic book day, I was like WHAT UP!!! Then I realized that it was on May The Fourth-Be- With-You Day and I did a little geeky jig! What could possibly be better than that!
For those of you that do not know what MAY THE FOURTH is, I mean other than a day of the year, it is a parody of the good old Star Wars saying "May The Force Be With You," making it the day to celebrate all that is STAR WARS! Pair that up with a day of free comics and the crowd goes wild!
Now you may be thinking, "comics are violent, I don't want my child to read them!" Well you are right and you are wrong. Yes SOME comics are incredibly violent and your child should definitely not be exposed to them, but there is a wide variety of child appropriate comics which may be something you should think of exposing your child too. If you child isn't really enticed by the normal books out there, bring them to a comic book store, ask for the children's section or call before hand to make sure they have children's comics and have them leaf through there. You never know, they could go from not reading at all to throwing themselves into a hobby that may very well turn into a lifetime love. There is even a website dedicated to informing parents all about the great options out there for the kiddies that also includes a kid friendly comic book store locator. And since there are so many great options for free his comic book day why not go down to your local participating store and get one. See if your children like it and take it from there! Some of the kid friendly comics that will be out for grabs include: Sesame Street, Smurfs, Disney Faires, Pippi Longstocking and Ugly Doll just to name a few. To find a participating retailer go to the official free comic book day site, they have a handy dandy locator that will help you guys find where the nearest store is from you! I know I will be out nice and early (it tends to get a bit busy on free comic book day..wonder why?) to get my hands on these children's titles for my little guy.
