Getting Very Large Breasts Could Lead to Reductions Down the Line

Patients need to be aware of the complications from overdoing it when they get breast augmentations.

A New York plastic surgeon says a news recent report about women seeing plastic surgeons to reduce previously enlarged breasts highlights the need for patients to be aware of the complications from overdoing it when they schedule a breast augmentation.

“There are surgeons who are traditionally conservative and rarely do double D breasts who also rarely have to go back and redo those breasts and make them smaller,” saidHomayoun Sasson, MD, director of plastic surgery at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and Plainview Hospital. “There are women who may not be well-informed of their breast shape. Once they get the implants, then they can have buyer’s remorse, so to speak, and they end up having to have the implant made smaller.”

Women may also need to have a revision to their breast augmentation if they have their initial procedure at a young age.

“There are women who start to have the breast augmentation in their late teens or early 20s,” Dr. Sasson said. “Those women go through many years of weight fluctuations, pregnancies and even breast feeding. And those are elements that change and affect the shape of the breast that has an implant in it. They very often need a revision or touch-up of their breast augmentation.”

Dr. Sasson advocates that women get as much information as they can before they get a breast augmentation so they can make an informed decision that is right for them.
