Green Acres Mall Reopens After Evacuation

The shopping center on Sunrise Highway was temporarily closed Sunday afternoon, according to Green Acres Mall officials.

Green Acres Mall was evacuated Sunday due to what mall officials said was a construction issue. The evacuation occurred Sunday afternoon and resulted in a brief closure of the shopping center.

"Due to a construction issue, the mall is currently closed," Green Acres Mall posted on its Facebook page. "We will keep you updated with any advances. Thank you for your patience."

A cleaning agent that may have contained chlorine spilled at the mall around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, Newsday reported, stating police described it as "very minor."

By 1:50 p.m., officials announced that Green Acres Mall had reopened.

Nobody was injured as a result of the hazmat incident, according to News 12.
