Hempstead Town Animal Shelter Names Director

A weekly look-in at news in the Town of Hempstead.

Cynthia Iacopella was named as the permanent director of the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter at Tuesday's town board meeting.

According to Newsday [paid link], Iacopella scored No. 1 on the town’s Civil Service Commission exam for the position with a score of 95 percent.

Iacopella will be paid $103,750 annually as the director, town spokesman Michael Deery told Newsday.

Iacopella, of Huntington Station, was first hired as assistant director of the shelter in July 2011. She was later appointed as provisional shelter director, after she completed her bachelor’s degree in August. The town requires the shelter director to have a bachelor’s degree; she already holds two associate degrees.

Town Announces 5th Annual Supervisor's Cup Golf Classic

Registration for the 5th Annual Supervisor's Cup Golf Classic has teed off with 144 entries to be determined by lottery drawing. The Golf Classic is set for Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Lido Golf Course. The rain date is set for Oct. 17. Town residents 18 years of age and older are allowed to register for the event.

For an entry fee of $15, golfers (selected by lottery) will receive 18 holes of tournament golf, a bucket of balls for the driving range, continental breakfast, afternoon barbeque, motorized golf cart, on-course refreshments, goody bag, awards and photographs. Tournament contests include a “Four Player Scramble,” “Men’s & Women’s Closest to the Pin,”  “Men’s & Women’s Most Accurate Drive” and “Men’s & Women’s Longest Drive.” 

Completed applications must be returned in person, postmarked or faxed before midnight, Friday, Aug. 24. Applications can be obtained at the Town of Hempstead Parks Department, 200 North Franklin St., Hempstead, NY, 11550. Applications will also be available online at TOH.LI. The Lido and Merrick Road Park Golf Courses will have applications on hand, as well as most Hempstead Town parks. Completed applications may be returned in person or by mail to the Parks Administration Building in Hempstead or by fax to (516) 292-6024.

Supervisor’s Cup participants will be chosen by lottery on Friday, August 31 at 1 p.m. in the Clubhouse of the Merrick Road Park Golf Course. Players whose names are drawn in the lottery will have five days to submit payment following their notification of entry. Selected names will be posted on the town web site at TOH.LI and winners will also be notified by phone and e-mail.
