High School Newspaper Honored At State Competition

Lynbrook High School's Horizon has participated in the Empire Scholastic Press Association award program since the 1990s.

LYNBROOK, NY — Lynbrook High School's Horizon newspaper has been honored in a state competition.

Horizon has a three-decade history participating in the Empire Scholastic Press Association.

This year the school's publication earned awards for:

  • Best Overall Newspaper Layout/Design, First Place
  • Best Overall Newspaper, Second Place
  • Best Illustration, Third Place (November 2021 cover by Amintta Ragavanis)

Reporter Alyssa Inserra was recognized twice:

  • Best Feature Story, Honorable Mention ("Concert Choir Culture")
  • Best Sports Story, Third Place ("MLS Mourns the Loss of Hank Aaron")

"I feel honored each year to get to work with such hard-working, talented, and dedicated students on Horizon," advisor and English teacher Jessica Sanders said in a statement. "This year’s winners are no exception. They continue to amaze me with each and every issue they have put out over the past two years. The fact that they have been able to produce these print editions despite all of the obstacles we’ve faced the past two years is truly incredible."
