LI Town Supports Tornado Victims

The collection drive seeks items including blankets and baby wipes for displaced families.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Coming together to support the families ravaged by tornadoes, the Town of Hempstead is asking residents to help.

Multiple tornadoes caused widespread damage to parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri. Dozens of people died.

Collection boxes are being placed at Town Hall and other municipal buildings in Hempstead.

Residents are asked to donate items that are most urgently needed in the rebuilding zone, including bottled water, laundry detergent, hand soap, paper towels and blankets.

"The Town of Hempstead has always stepped up to help people in need across our nation and throughout the world," Supervisor Don Clavin said in a statement. "Today, we are calling on town residents to help provide essential supplies to people who lost so much during these devastating storms.”

A box to help in the relief effort will also be stationed at Echo Park until Dec. 31.

"We are confident that Town of Hempstead residents will come through for their fellow Americans during this difficult time," Clavin said.
