Long Island American Water Opens New Iron Removal Plant
New state-of-the-art facility helps provides safe water to the community.
The Lynbrook-based Long Island American Water opened its new 4MGD (millions gallons per day) iron removal facility in Malverne on Thursday.
The state-of-the-art plant will help remove iron particles from water pumped into Long Island homes. Long Island Water currently serves over 200,000 customers.
Construction of the $7.5 million plant began in October 2009. Workers had razed the existing site and built a new building, conducted maintenance on two existing wells that it had, installed three filters, pressure vessels, a new electrical system, new chemical treatment systems, an emergency power generator, automatic filter controls, and a new Supervisory Control and Automated Data Acquisition (SCADA).
