Lynbrook Wrestlers Clinch Conference Championship

It was the first time in a decade the team has had the honor.

Finishing the season with a 9-8 record and 5-0 conference record, the Lynbrook High School wrestling team clinched its first conference championship title in more than 10 years.

The team placed second in the county qualifiers, scoring more than 250 points. Fourteen All-Conference wrestlers qualified to compete at the Nassau County Wrestling Championships—the most since 1984. They placed seventh out of 55 teams at the counties, which was their best finish in more than 30 years.

Junior Joseph Becker at 106 pounds, senior Matthew Swanson at 132 pounds and junior Matthew Renz at 285 pounds all made it into the semifinal round. All three were named All-County players. Becker was named the county champion in his weight class — the first county champion for the Owls in 10 years. Swanson finished second and Renz finished in fourth place.

Becker and Swanson were both state qualifiers — the highest number of qualifiers in a single season in Lynbrook history. Swanson went on to place third in his weight class at the New York State Wrestling Championships. The last Lynbrook wrestler to place at the States was Marco Sola, who took 3rd place at 145 pounds in 1982. The team placed 41st out of 155 teams. This was the best state placing ever for a Lynbrook team.

“I am so very proud and happy for my wrestlers,” said coach Richard Renz. “They worked so hard to achieve an epic finish to the season.”
