Lynbrook's OSC World Announces Facebook Added to Digital Fly's Real Time Social Media Monitoring Service for Schools

OSC World has added Facebook to its Digital Fly real time social media monitoring service available for for schools.

LYNBROOK, NY; April 27, 2016 – Lynbrook-based OSC World, a pioneer and developer of industry-leading educational test scanning technology and educational technology services, has announced that Facebook geographic social media monitoring and review has been added to Digital Fly, (http://bit.ly/OSCWorldDigitalFly) a leading real-time geographically fenced public social media monitoring and alert system designed for the education sector.

Now, along with Twitter and Instagram, Facebook has been approved for inclusion in OSC World’s Digital Fly Social Media Awareness Software. Facebook operates differently than other social media sites. Once a Facebook account has been authorized within Digital Fly, the system will pick up all posts on that Facebook user’s Timeline (wall) and the Timeline of any Pages or Groups where the user is a Page Administrator. Timelines includes any posts, including posts made by friends directly on a profile page or posts that individuals are tagged in. Once school district pages are connected to Digital Fly, the system can pull information and match this against the clients custom filters. In compliance with Facebook’s privacy rules, only the Facebook user is authorized to see posts and the information they contain.

“Facebook is the largest and most widely used social media site in the United States. Students of all ages, parents and communities utilize Facebook everyday to communicate and share information. Unfortunately, Facebook is also a place where students are bullied and post about self-harm or about other self-destructive behaviors. Facebook is also a place where potential threats are made against schools or individuals. It was important to us to add Facebook to the social sites that we monitor for school districts so that they can get the important information they need to protect students, staff and property,” said Derek Petersen, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer of Digital Fly.

Developed for school districts, Digital Fly alerts school officials to potential threats made against students, staff members and property. Using geolocation, the proprietary Fly Paper Engine that monitors and tracks social media search terms, watch lists, keywords, hashtags, users and groups, which have been hand-selected by school administration personnel, it identifies patterns and movement over time. Information is secured only from open social media accounts accessible to the public; no private personal data is ever searched.

Since partnering with OSC World to bring Digital Fly to the education marketplace, schools and school districts from across the country have embraced the system. More than a dozen school districts in New York as well as schools in Louisiana and Missouri are using Digital Fly. In New York, a number of Regional BOCES and BOCES Regional Information Centers have also signed deals to offer the service to local school districts.

With Digital Fly, social media data is analyzed and ranked for potential threats and sent to district officials when potential threats are identified. School officials and authorities then have the ability to act to ensure student safety. Data can also be used forensically for up to a three-month look back for investigation or to review trends. This can be done at any time with 24/7 web-based access from any computer with an authorized user.

“Adding Facebook to Digital Fly makes our system more powerful and adds an important layer of protection for students, teachers and schools. Over the past year we have traveled the nation introducing Digital Fly to school administrators. With threats of violence and the need to better understand communities, the service that Digital Fly provides is needed now more than ever,” said Michel Richez, OSC World Executive VP of Business Development.
