The personal finance company ranked the different towns, villages and cities across the state based on a variety of crime metrics sourced from the FBI across 210 NY cities.
According to their website, ValuePenguin collected the most recent crime data available from the 2014 FBI crime statistics by city, excluding towns with fewer than 5,000 residents since they are more sensitive to crime score fluctuations for fewer crimes committed.

Malverne ranked second overall in the state but first in the small town category.
The village only had one reported violent crime in 2014 and had the third-lowest rate of property crime in the study, according to ValuePenguin.
"Malverne Village involves its citizens in law enforcement by training volunteers to serve as Police Reserve Officers," the report read. "This community has a very high rate of home ownership (nearly 93 percent), and the median household income was almost $56,000 per year above the state’s median household income."
The Nassau village was beat out by Lewisboro Town in Westchester County.
Kings Point Village was the only other Nassau County village to make the top 5 list.
Elmira Town and Pleasantville Village ranked in at numbers 3 and 4 respectively on the list.
