Nassau Man Fled Traffic Stop, Injured Officer During Arrest: PD

Police say two men were arrested, but one of them fled the pulled-over car and ran into a nearby restaurant first.

ELMONT, NY — Two men were arrested in Elmont Thursday afternoon after police pulled over a car, and one of the men tried to flee.

According to police, officers on patrol on Meacham Avenue at 4:25 p.m. saw a 2001 Acura heading north and committing multiple traffic infractions. The officers pulled the car over in front of Texas Chicken and Burgers, at 1349 Hempstead Turnpike. Police say the driver — Joshua Mordi, 23, of North Montague Street, Valley Stream — was driving with a suspended license, and also had three outstanding warrants.

During the investigation, police say the passenger — Deonte O'Connor, 23, of Lawrence Street, Uniondale — got out of the car and ran into the nearby restaurant, locking himself in the bathroom. The officers called in backup, and O'Connor exited the bathroom a short time later, police said. The officers tried to search O'Connor, and police say he became combative. O'Connor was eventually placed under arrest, but one officer was injured in the process, police say.
