Nassau Police Start Charity Bike Ride to Washington D.C.

NEW YORK, NY - Over the next four days, 26 members of the Nassau County Police Department, including Acting Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter, will be riding their bicycles over 225 miles as part of the Police Unity Tour.

The local officers will be riding alongside 200 officers from the Port Authority Police Department and other police jurisdictions to ride from the 911 Memorial in New York City to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C.

The annual ride is made in support of the families of all the officers that have been killed in the line of duty and when the officers reach Washington D.C., the tour will have raised over $2 million to support the families.

The formal ceremony began on Monday at 9 a.m. in front of the Reflecting Pools at the 911 Memorial with the reading of the names of all Law Enforcement Officers killed in the Line of Duty from New York in 2015 and the officers killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The riders then began their trip and will arrive in Washington D.C. on Thursday, May 12, at 3 p.m.

After leaving the memorial, the officers will ride along the West Side Highway to the Holland Tunnel continuing south to New Jersey.

Along the route they will be joined by a total of 1800 other Police Unity Tour cyclists.

At the ceremony, Charo Lopez, the sister of police officer Artie Lopez, who was killed in the line of duty in October 2012. presented a shield that belonged to Lopez to Officer David Hicks of the 7th Precinct and Sargent Arnold Rothenberg of the 4th Precinct just before they left.
