New Bake Shop Hits Lynbrook With Flavor
Founder, head chef Allison Shapiro opens The Sweet Peace on Atlantic Ave.
The Sweet Peace Specialty Bake Shop is the newest addition to Lynbrook’s eclectic array of shopping locations and delicatessens along Atlantic Avenue.
Centrally located between and in the heart of the village, The Sweet Peace is shaping up to give the town a new look and a taste like you wouldn’t believe.
Founder Allison Shapiro, a native of the Lynbrook area, is the mind, body and soul behind The Sweet Peace. A 2008 graduate of the highly regarded French Culinary Institute in New York City, Shapiro offers specialty cakes for any occasion, along with ready-made cakes, cupcakes, truffles, chocolates and other types of pastries.

“I would not be where I am today without the support of family and friends,” Shapiro said. “The entire faculty at French Culinary will always have a special place in my heart because they took a chance initially having little experience in cooking and put me in a very demanding program, and I absolutely succeeded.”
Shapiro broke into the industry working at the Jacque Torres Chocolate Factory in Dumbo, N.Y., as well as a specialty bake shop in Levittown, N.Y. There is no doubt that the grand opening of this one-of-a-kind shop — officially opened Dec. 22 — is just one of many career goals for the aspiring chef.

“I outgrew where I was working since the business was getting bigger and it was time to move on, although I never had intentions of opening up my own store right away,” Shapiro said. “One thing led to another and it just made sense.”
Just a few of many cake flavors offered include vanilla, chocolate, almond, red velvet, banana and cinnamon swirl, along with an equally extensive list of filling options available. The cakes and pastries offered at The Sweet Peace have an artistic creativity and implement the customers’ personality and thoughts into each project. That artistic side of the business, however, is nothing new to Shapiro.
“I was teaching art and am a trained painter and sculpture and did restoration before that, so in my eyes, I didn’t make a total career change, just the medium in which I work in,” she added.
Custom-made orders may be delivered, picked up or bought on scene in this very welcoming setting. The unique shop is further highlighted by a General Mills Gold Metal Flour advertisement on a brick wall upon walking into the premises. The rare discovery was found upon beginning construction and is estimated to be from a store that existed in that location in the early 1900s.
