New York American Water Awards Scholarships to Five College Bound Local High School Students

Malverne, NY (June 20, 2016) – New York American Water has awarded five college-bound students each with a $3,000 scholarship through its partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies. This is the sixth consecutive year New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area as part of its commitment to fostering the future workforce and leaders of the State’s water supply.

“We congratulate these five outstanding young adults on all their achievements throughout their high school careers, and for their commitment to pursuing a science, technology or engineering education,” said Brian Bruce, President of New York American Water. “We look forward to watching their continued successes in the future.” The five scholarship recipients are:

Angelo Bellomo, of Valley Stream South High School, who maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.9, and was on the Principal’s List for exhibiting academic excellence. In addition, Bellomo participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including varsity lacrosse, varsity soccer, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, National Honor Society, Language Honor Society, Athletic Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He also spent the summer of 2015 in Spain teaching English. He will attend the State University of New York at Binghamton in the fall.

William Lithen of Lynbrook High School, who maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.9 and participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities including varsity soccer, winter and spring track. He also participated in the Hofstra University Summer Science Research Program. He will be attending Cornell University in the fall.

Sophia Parise of Malverne graduated from West Hempstead High School, who maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.9, and participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities including varsity volleyball, varsity bowling, track, key club, student council, Girl Scouts, West Hempstead lions club, National Art Honor Society, National Italian Honor Society and National Honor Society. She will be attending Syracuse University in the fall.

Kaylin Stark of North Bellmore graduated from Mepham High School, having maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.9, and participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities including National Honor Society, Key Club and Habitat for Humanity. She is also a member of her school’s honor roll. She will attend Nassau Community College in the fall.

Zachary Zysberg of Bellmore graduated from John F. Kennedy High School, having maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.8, and participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities including Math Team, Future Business Leaders of America, Environmental Club, Culture Club and Mock Trail. He is also a volunteer for “Robbie’s Run,” participates in Kiwanis’ Key Club, and received an honorable mention at the Toshiba Exploravision Competition. He will attend Stony Brook University in the fall.
