No. 78 — Have a Meal at White Castle

One of 100 things to do in the village.

No. 78 in the Patch series, “,” is to check out White Castle.

If you’re a Lynbrook resident, you have definitely heard about White Castle. Many people come from far away to have these “belly bombers.” Even those who have moved away and come back to visit, this is one of their first stops.

As a longtime Lynbrook resident, I can remember just about every Saturday on our way to family gatherings, we had to stop there and bring tons of them with us. What a long car ride that would become, having to sit in a car and smell them the whole ride.

These burgers have a unique taste and are a fast-food favorite for many. There isn’t a time of day that you go past our Lynbrook White Castle that you don’t see a full parking lot and lines inside. Perfectly located near the Lynbrook train station, those commuters often wind up having to stop in and get some White Castle.

Going back to my high school years, I even had friends that used to work there.

I took some time and researched our famous fast-food restaurant and found some interesting facts I didn’t know about.

Did you know that White Castle started back in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas? Back in 1921, the burgers were five cents. That price would be reduced and increased over the next few years. In 1950, the burgers went from ten cents to twelve cents.

The home office of White Castle was set up in Columbus, Ohio in 1934 and remains there today.

Did you know that during World War II, White Castle sold hot dogs and eggs due to meat rationing? Did you also know White Castle was the first hamburger chain? It was also the first to sell a million hamburgers, a billion hamburgers and the first to sell frozen fast food.

White Castle is a landmark in our town. Next time you are looking for that late-night snack, lunch, dinner, or any other time — since they are always open — go check it out again. See if they are what you remember.
