NY Islanders Player Shares Life Lessons With Lynbrook Students

Third graders from Waverly Park Elementary School in the Lynbrook Public Schools received a special visit from New York Islanders defenseman Devon Toews on Jan. 24. The visit was organized by third grade teacher Jaclyn Miller who is a friend of Toews. The professional hockey player spoke with third grade students about how he began his hockey career, the importance of education, hard work and sportsmanship.

Students learned that Toews started playing hockey in Vancouver at the age of three and attended early morning hockey practices all throughout elementary school to build his skills. Toews spoke about the importance of doing well in school and how he attended Quinnipiac University. During his time there, he was drafted by the New York Islanders to play for their farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Unfortunately, Toews’ plans to play for the actual New York Islanders were postponed when he hurt his shoulder and needed surgery. Students learned that he joined the New York Islanders team two years ago. Students were highly engaged as Toews answered questions and signed autographs for some lucky Islanders fans in the classroom.

“He is a great example of all that a professional athlete should be,” said Miller.
