Officer Hurt During Gas Station Robbery Arrest: Police

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — A gas station was robbed in West Hempstead over the holiday weekend.

Police said Edwin Nunez, 37, of Lakeview, stole several packs of beer before getting into a verbal altercation with a store worker.

It happened Sunday just before 10 a.m. at the BP Gas Station located on Woodfield Road.

The employee followed Nunez outside, where Nunez struck him several times and threw the victim's cell phone in the street, authorities said.

An investigation led police to Nunez's home. One officer was injured placing Nunez under arrest, as he became violent and combative, police said.

The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Nunez is charged with second-degree assault, third-degree robbery and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was expected to be arraigned on Monday.
