PREVIEW: Get Set to Sweat On This 'Journey'

Steve Strangio gets special access to West Hempstead's women-only gym for a heart-pumping adventure.

So why is it that women can have a gym that is “Ladies Only?”

I mean, if we had a “Men Only” gym, then we’d have picketers, riots, and maybe even a Lifetime movie entitled, “MAN GYM: Evil Squat Thrust!”

To answer this question I travelled to Lady of America in West Hempstead, part of a chain of gyms that caters strictly to women’s fitness needs. There, I was greeted by a very savvy and equally fit woman named Vita Zorbo, who owns and operates this location.

Zorbo,is a petite but tough lady. (Put it to you this way, I'd want her to have my back in a fight.) Her calm and business-like demeanor is tempered with a drill sergeant’s dedication to fitness. She has taken special care in making sure that women feel 100 percent comfortable in this environment, but she made a special exception for the "Journey To" production team, welcoming me and my ace videographer (and all-around MacGuyver dude) Tom Zweibel to her oasis of feminine bodyshaping.

But in order to gain the information I was seeking, I first had to survive several vigorous workout routines at the hands of Zorbo.

This was probably my most challenging 'Journey' so far. I mean, have you ever used a weighted hulu hoop? Punched a heavy bag with pink gloves? Performed crunches while holding a weighted ball between your legs?

Well, I have … and you’ll get to see me do all of these things in living color this Tuesday when my latest adventure premieres on Malverne-West Hempstead Patch.

You won't see any “Situations” running around, showing off their way too-tanned abs, but you'll see me sweat like a pro athlete as Zorbo challenges me to different circuit training machines.

So did I survive my workout?

Did I get an answer to my initial question?

How good did I look in sweatpants?

Find out all of these answers and so much more by joining me on my latest journey.
