Robert W. Carbonaro School Hosts ‘The Masked Reader’

Robert W. Carbonaro School in the Valley Stream 24 School District celebrated the conclusion of Read Across America Week with its second annual “Masked Reader” event, inspired by the popular television show The Masked Singer.

In the days leading up to the main event, staff members visited classrooms daily to read aloud to students while dressed in elaborate costumes. Throughout the week, students listened closely to both the stories and the voices reading them, as clues were shared hinting at the identity of each mystery reader. Each session added to the excitement and anticipation, turning the school into a hub of literary enthusiasm and curiosity.

The week-long celebration culminated in a high-energy assembly featuring the much-anticipated reveal. Staff members took the stage in their costumes, which included a bumblebee, frog, shark, and unicorn, as final clues were shared about each reader. Cheers and laughter filled the room as students eagerly guessed and then discovered the identities behind the masks.

“Events like The Masked Reader bring learning to life in ways that truly resonate with our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas. “I want to thank our reading teachers and our library media specialist for creating such a joyful and engaging experience. Their creativity and dedication help spark curiosity and foster a genuine love of reading. I am also grateful to all our teachers, who support the development of literacy every day in their classrooms and help cultivate a lifelong love of learning for our students.”

Blending the thrill of performance with the joy of reading, the event proved to be a resounding success, capturing students’ imaginations while reinforcing the message that reading is both important and fun. The dedicated staff of Valley Stream 24 played a key role in making Read Across America Week a memorable and engaging experience for students.
