“Social Life” Features James C. Metzger’s Giving-Back Philosophy

PAL supporter also contributes to other civic programs on Long Island.

Just before the summer, fourth, fifth and sixth grade lacrosse players from Hempstead PAL celebrated the conclusion of the program’s seventh season with its second best record in the Nassau-Suffolk County Police Athletic Lacrosse League. Many awards were presented and one player received the James C. Metzger Award.

Metzger has been with the team since its first season, providing the equipment needed by the players and presenting this annual recognition to the one player who displays a strong work ethic and consistent improvement during the season. Hempstead PAL is just one of the Long Island programs that receives Metzger’s support and that of his company, The Whitmore Group, a leading insurance brokerage and financial firm headquartered in Garden City.

The cover story of the September 2018 edition of Social Life Magazine, the premier luxury publication for the Hamptons, features Metzger’s considerable contributions to the communities of Nassau and Suffolk counties. The article explains that his desire to give-back is derived from his upbringing (he credits both his parents) and his successful business philosophy (he makes insurance personal)—he genuinely is interested in and concerned about the professional and personal needs of his clients.

“The Big Assist” is the second cover feature about Metzger in Social Live Magazine. Since a 2014 article, Metzger has continued to grow his business and increase his civic support. His business acumen derives from his sports connections—“Everything I ever needed to know about business I learned on the sports field." That mantra is found on a website that features Metzger’s connections to the local sports programs and also includes a twice-monthly blog about interesting and compelling stories from the amateur and professional worlds of sports.

Sports And More

Metzger supports the boys’ program at his old high school, Half Hollow Hills East, where he starred in lacrosse and also football and basketball during the 1970s. He also presents leadership awards to one player on each of the six teams that compete in the finals of the Section VIII Nassau County high school boys' lacrosse championships. Metzger is a major contributor to the athletic programs, including lacrosse, at Hofstra University, where he was an All-American lacrosse player during the 1980s.

Metzger also extends his goodwill to many other people and organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, The American Heart Association, other health care initiatives and Island Harvest.

His formula for personal growth (and business success) is to remain personally involved in the programs that interest the people of Long Island by sharing his interest, time and a percentage of the profits with his extended community.
