ELMONT, NY — Neighbors of UBS Arena have had to deal with congestion since the building opened last fall. But the biggest problem has been parking, causing an overflow into the neighborhood during events.

Assemblymember Michaelle Solages (D-Valley Stream) sponsored legislation recently signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul that alleviates some of the concerns.

The state gave the go-ahead for local municipalities to allow permits on the surrounding Elmont and Floral Park blocks.

"The Town [of Hempstead] would provide residents with a parking permit," Solages, a guest on Tuesday's "Patch AM," said. "Anyone who doesn't have a parking permit on the street would get a ticket."

She said that could cost $150 for failing to park properly.

Solages said the permits, though, are free of charge.

The lawmaker said creating the permit became necessary, due to so many UBS Arena visitors filling up residential areas.

"It really has become a disruption for community members," she said. "We have eventgoers who are doing inappropriate things in our street... This will allow the community to have purview over their streets."

Solages hopes the neighborhood permits will encourage more people to use the parking garage or mass transit when attending UBS Arena.
