William L. Buck School Students Bring History to Life with Interactive Black History Month Wax Museum
Sixth-Grade Students Work in Pairs to Showcase the Achievements of Black Historical Figures and Cultural Icons
In recognition of Black History Month, sixth-grade students at William L. Buck School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently hosted an interactive wax museum celebrating influential Black historical figures and cultural leaders. The engaging event honored the achievements, resilience, and lasting impact of individuals who have shaped history while highlighting students’ research, collaboration, and presentation skills.
Working in pairs, students selected a notable figure to study and conducted in-depth research using both primary and secondary sources. Through their investigations, students developed a deeper understanding of each individual’s contributions and legacy. Each team then prepared a written presentation and speech, with one student portraying the historical figure through costume and props while the other shared researched facts and insights about the person’s life and accomplishments.
On the day of the showcase, the wax museum came to life as students stood in character, ready to educate visitors. Parents and guardians were invited to attend, providing an opportunity to see firsthand the depth of student learning, creativity, and dedication. The interactive format not only celebrated historical achievements but also strengthened students’ skills in research, public speaking, and teamwork.
