MASSAPEQUA, NY — The Nassau County police department was called for investigation Wednesday after a situation arose involving a spray bottle with a "distinguishable odor" at Massapequa High School, the district said in a statement to parents.

District officials said the incident was immediately addressed by school personnel and the item was secured, adding that NCPD would be conducting a follow-up investigation.

"The matter was addressed by school administration and in coordination with the Nassau County Police Department," the district said. "We understand that situations like this can understandably create concern within our community, and we ask everyone to refrain from sharing rumors or unverified information, as doing so can contribute to unnecessary fear and misinformation. The Nassau County Police Department did a thorough investigation and we take these matters very seriously."

In a report, News 12 Long Island quoted a student saying the spray bottle smelled like gasoline.

When reached for comment Thursday morning, the district declined to answer what the intended use of the spray bottle was, or what disciplinary action — if any — might arise from the spray bottle incident.
