Massapequa Kayakers Rescued From Oyster Bay Waters, Police Say

MASSAPEQUA, NY — An evening kayaking trip turned into a marine rescue effort Monday after a pair of men were swept away from the shoreline off Massapequa, police said.

Nassau County police said they received reports of a water emergency in Massapequa at 6:35 p.m. Monday. The two men, police said, had set their kayaks in the water at Alhambra Beach before being swept away from the shoreline by strong winds and currents. Those currents and winds, police said, were also keeping the men from paddling back to the beach.

After being taken out by the wind and the tide, the men called 911 and the call was answered by a Nassau County police helicopter, a county marine unit and Town of Oyster Bay Constables, police said. The men and their kayaks were brought aboard the rescue vessels and taken safely back to shore, police said. Police said there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

In the aftermath of the water rescue, police said recreational watercraft users should check the weather and water conditions before heading out into the surf, and that they should always wear life jackets.
