County Health Department Advises Against Bathing At Massapequa Beaches

MASSAPEQUA, NY — The Nassau County Department of Health has issued an advisory against bathing at three beaches along the south shore, including Massapequa's Biltmore Beach Club and Philip Healey Beach.

According to the county, the advice comes as a result of the heavy rainfall that covered much of Long Island Monday morning, bringing as much as 3 inches of rain before 9 a.m.

The county said the advisory was issued as a "precautionary measure" to protect prospective swimmers against stormwater runoff.

"Stormwater runoff can impact bathing water quality by elevating bacteria levels, which may cause exceedances of the New York State standard for bathing water quality," the county said.

The third south shore beach listed on the county's advisory is Island Park Beach. The county said its advisory would be lifted at 10 a.m. Tuesday unless more heavy rainfall comes or additional high bacteria levels are found in water samples.
