MASSAPEQUA, NY — Massapequa schools reopened for the 2026-27 school year this week, bringing almost 6,000 students back from summer vacation for a new year of learning.

On Wednesday, it was the students in first through twelfth grade, and one day later a Massapequa tradition continued: The youngest learners in the district, Massapequa's kindergartners, had their first day of school on the second day of the year.

In total, there were 579 kindergartners across the six elementary schools, and district officials said all hands were on deck to welcome them in. Whether they were walking in from the bus or walking to and from class, district officials said a team of administrators, teachers and support staff were on hand to get them where they needed to go.

"A successful opening truly takes a team effort, and Massapequa is the team of teams," Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. "As I visited our schools throughout the first two days, what stood out most were the smiles, positive energy and genuine passion throughout."
