Massapequa High School Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist

The senior earned the recognition based on his 2025 PSAT score and will continue competing for a National Merit Scholarship.

MASSAPEQUA, NY — A Massapequa High School senior has been named a semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

David "DJ" Moravec earned the distinction after receiving a qualifying score on the 2025 PSAT, according to the Massapequa School District. He was one of more than 16,000 students selected for the honor in the program's 72nd year.

Moravec is now eligible to advance in the scholarship competition, which will award approximately 6,700 scholarships worth a combined $24 million, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

His application includes academic records, school and community activities, leadership experience, and honors and awards.

Scholarship winners, who receive the title of Merit Scholar, are expected to be announced in the spring, according to the scholarship corporation.

Outside of his classes at Massapequa High School, Moravec participates in the video game design program at Long Island High School for the Arts. He is also a graduate of Unqua Elementary School, according to the district.
