Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. NY: Massena Town Board okays funding for library bus shelter (masstransitmag.com) — Massena's Town Board has approved funding and a 10-year maintenance plan for a new solar-powered bus shelter at the Massena Public Library, improving comfort and safety for riders. The town will cover labor, materials, and transport for the concrete pad and installation, while federal, state, and local funds pay for the shelter itself, expected to be in place by next spring.
2. Jamboree with music and food planned in Massena for David LaVean (northcountrynow.com) — A community jamboree with music and food is set for Oct. 17 at Amvets Post 4 in Massena to support longtime local resident and Navy veteran David LaVean during a serious health and financial crisis. Neighbors are invited to attend, donate raffle items, or contribute money, services, or gift certificates to help ease the family's burden.
3. Schine Festival of Trees set for Oct. 3 in Massena (northcountrynow.com) — Massena residents can explore decorated holiday trees and support the Schine Theater's renovation at the new Schine Into the Holidays Festival of Trees on Oct. 3 at the Massena VFW. Proceeds aid the Unlock the Schine capital campaign, with raffles, ornaments, and snowflake tributes helping push the historic downtown theater closer to reopening as a cultural hub.
4. Wood pellet demand surges in North Country (wwnytv.com) — Massena residents relying on wood pellets for heat are seeing sharply higher demand at Triple A Building Center, where sales are up 65% across its Massena, Canton, and Potsdam locations. Local suppliers say high fuel prices are pushing more people to pellet stoves, and while they expect to keep pellets in stock, rising delivery surcharges are cutting into margins and could influence prices this winter.
5. Janet McElheran Brownell, 89, Massena (northcountrynow.com) — Family and friends in Massena are mourning the passing of Janet McElheran Brownell, a 1936 Massena native and Massena High School graduate who later worked at Alcoa and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. A memorial service will be held in spring 2027 in Massena to honor her life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and community member.
