Avoid This New York Intersection During The Holiday Weekend

As you shop Black Friday sales and head to holiday gatherings, beware of the most dangerous intersection in each state.

The most dangerous intersection in New York is in downtown Brooklyn, according to a new study.

The intersection of Tillary Street and Flatbush Avenue is more dangerous than any other intersection in the state, a Chicago law firm revealed this week.

Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Rubens and Kress law firm analysts determined each state's most dangerous intersection.

The study's findings are confirmed by NYPD data that shows the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Tillary Street has been the site of 425 collisions since 2012.

The same corner was found to be the most accident prone intersection in New York City by Aleksey Bilogur, a math student at CUNY Baruch College, in 2016.

Bilogur estimated that Tillary and Flatbush Avenues see about 180 collisions per year.

One of the most recent fatal accidents on Tillary Street and Flatbush Avenue occurred in April 2013 when a driver making a left turn and struck a motorcyclist riding a Harley Davidson.

Tillary Street — which stretches about nine blocks between Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn Heights and Navy Street in DUMBO — was included in Mayor Bill de Blasio's $1.6 billion Vision Zero plan in 2017 .

As part of the mayor's initiative to improve traffic safety, the DOT will widen the pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, install new crosswalks, and plant 50 trees by summer of 2018, according to the Mayor's Office.

While Brooklyn stood out among state statistics, it was not recognized as one of the top 1o most dangerous intersections in the nation.

The most dangerous intersection is in Bensalem, PA, according to a study by Time Magazine.

The 11 runners-up for the most dangerous intersection, according to the Time study, each had six fatalities during the 10-year period. They are:

  • Elizabeth, New Jersey: East Jersey and Spring streets
  • St. Louis, Missouri: North Grand Boulevard and Montgomery Street
  • Asheville, North Carolina: Patton Avenue and New Leicester Highway
  • Awendaw, South Carolina: North Highway 17 and Seewee Road
  • Lucedale, Mississippi: Routes 63 and 98
  • Astor, Florida: State Roads 40 and 19
  • Orlando, Florida: North Semoran Boulevard and Old Cheney Highway
  • Kissimmee, Florida: Vista Del Lago Boulevard and Route 192
  • Frostproof, Florida: South Scenic Highway and County Road 700
  • Hialeah Gardens, Florida: Hialeah Gardens Boulevard and North Okeechobee Road
  • Wilton, Maine: Allen Street and Route 2

A 2010 NHTSA study determined 55.7 percent of crashes were a result of distracted driving, failure to pay attention or poor visibility, and 29.2 percent were a result of a poor decision made by the driver, whether by timing or aggressive driving.
