Bicyclist Hit by Car in Holtsville Seriously Hurt

Accident occurred on North Ocean Avenue Saturday afternoon, police say.

A man riding his bicycle on North Ocean Avenue in Holtsville Saturday afternoon was seriously injured when he was struck by a car, police said.

According to police, the man, whom police are attempting to identify, was riding a bike northbound on the southbound shoulder of North Ocean when he apparently attempted to cross the road at about 3:40 p.m.

The man was struck north of Cedar Avenue by a southbound 2010 Hyundai Elantra being driven by 61-year-old Celeste McKenna, of Patchogue, police said.

The bicyclist was treated at the scene by members of the Holtsville Fire Department and then transported via Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries. McKenna was not injured.

The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
